St. George's Breakfast Program
Breakfast is served at 8:30, but by 8:15 about 15 people are gathered in a circle to pray. A few of the regular guests had asked the St. George’s volunteers if they could pray together before the meal. Soon several more guests joined in and began leading the prayers. For over 14 years, St. George’ Church in Brooklyn has been feeding both the body and spirit of their neighbors at the Community Breakfast Program.
The St. Martin DePorres Guild oversees this ministry and as an officer of the Guild, Vera McKie has been there from the start. Still grocery shopping for the meals, Vera has seen this program grow to serve 75 to 100 meals two Saturdays each month. Even as the numbers grow, volunteers take a moment to sit and listen to or pray with a guest. They know in that it is in that moment that they are caring for Christ himself.
