St. Peter's by-the-Sea in Bay Shore has long served as a gathering place for the wider community: renting its gym to youth sports leagues, its education building to a Christian homeschool academy, and sponsoring a cub pack and scout troop that bring young families through its doors each week. As the congregation itself has grown smaller and older, these partnerships have become a vital way for St. Peter's to stay connected to children and families, even as its own Sunday school has quieted.
That impulse is now taking a new shape: rather than trying to rebuild children's ministry alone, St. Peter's is joining with several other congregations across the Atlantic Deanery — each with too few children or volunteers to run a program solo — to offer a shared Vacation Bible School in the church's garden and farm. Children come together not only from St. Peter's own community but from neighboring parishes, the cub pack and scout troop, and the homeschool families who already know the campus well. What started as a single congregation's effort to reconnect with its youngest neighbors is becoming a small but growing deanery-wide tradition, one organizers hope will open the door to more shared children's programming throughout the year.
