Ministries at Christ Church in Bellport are addressing significant challenges in the surrounding community. The first issue is the prevalent food insecurity, which the parish has been actively combating through its food pantry. However, they have also realized the need for clothing and household items for newly-arrived immigrants and lower-income residents. To respond to this need, the parish has established a thrift store with support from Episcopal Ministries of Long Island to provide affordable second-hand clothing and goods. This ministry offers an opportunity to introduce the community to the Episcopal Church, extending an invitation to join their faith community.
The second issue this project aims to tackle is the isolation and loneliness experienced by some parishioners, particularly older individuals who have lost their spouses. By volunteering in the thrift store, these parishioners will have a chance to interact with people they would not have met otherwise, fostering a sense of community and meaningful engagement.
By accepting donations of gently used clothing and household items, the thrift store will offer quality items for sale to the community. This initiative will also provide an opportunity for individuals to witness the love of Christ in action as they interact with the volunteers.
Christ Church has already partnered with other existing church thrift stores in the area, which have already supported them by donating some of the necessary start-up equipment.
Overall, this thrift store project embodies the church's mission to serve Christ in all persons, "love thy neighbor," and create a vibrant faith community that reaches out to those in need and welcomes all who seek to be part of their mission.
The thrift store is open on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 10am to 2pm.
