Since 2019, Church of the Redeemer in Astoria, Queens has opened its doors every Wednesday evening to serve hot, home-cooked meals to anyone in need. Led by kitchen leads Yolanda Jiménez and Cristina Acevedo, the Wednesday Community Supper prepares around 57 meals each week.
Astoria is one of New York City's most linguistically diverse neighborhoods, home to residents from over 100 countries. Queens also carries one of the highest food insecurity rates in the state, and the need is felt most acutely among elderly and immigrant residents. The Wednesday Community Supper exists precisely for them.
For many regulars, Wednesday at Redeemer is one of the most reliable anchors of their week. The supper is followed by a Mass, open to all, a gentle invitation into deeper community for those who want it.
