Migrant Direct Support at Holy Apostles

Holy Apostles partners with PS 15, The Patrick Daly School in Red Hook, Brooklyn, a Title I school now welcoming a significant number of migrant families. Since March 2020, the parish has provided direct support including school supplies, rent assistance, relocation help from shelters to permanent housing, utility payments, holiday gifts, clothing, Thanksgiving meals, and groceries. The ministry continues to respond quickly and nimbly to emerging needs, serving as a vital support alongside the school’s administration, which often functions as much as a social service agency as an educational one.

With the recent influx of families, Holy Apostles expands its efforts through EMLI funding. The parish provides supermarket gift cards for hot meals, prepaid U.S.-compatible cell phones so families can stay connected, basic necessities like clothing, coats, and shoes, and funds for laundry. Volunteers and parishioners also help organize donations by supplying shelving, rolling racks, and bins to create a dedicated “closet” at the school.

Beyond material aid, parishioners offer reading help, knit hats and gloves, provide holiday meals and gifts, and show up as neighbors who care. Families at PS 15 not only receive tangible support but also experience being seen and loved as children of God, transforming their sense of belonging and sparking new relationships of mutual trust.
